Rosacea BBL HEROic

Rosacea redness comes largely from dilated superficial blood vessels in the dermis. BBL HEROic delivers broadband light at wavelengths absorbed preferentially by haemoglobin in those vessels — the absorbed energy converts to heat, the vessel wall is damaged, and the body gradually clears the vessel over the following weeks. Over a course of sessions, the visible vascular component of rosacea reduces. The light does not cure rosacea (which is a chronic inflammatory condition) but it manages its visible signs significantly.

A typical initial course is 3–5 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Maintenance is then usually one session every 6–12 months to keep the visible vascular component under control. Patients with more diffuse facial redness or more reactive skin may need slower pacing or lower energy settings — your practitioner will calibrate the course to your response after the first 1–2 sessions.

Some patients experience a mild flush or warmth for a few hours immediately after treatment — this is part of the photothermal response and is not a true rosacea flare. A genuine rosacea flare (sustained redness, pustule development) after treatment is uncommon when the device is correctly calibrated for rosacea-prone skin, but it can occur. We discuss your specific triggers in consultation, may recommend pre-treatment skincare to stabilise the skin, and adjust energy if your skin proves more reactive than typical.

In most cases yes — and your prescribed rosacea medications should continue unless your dermatologist or GP advises otherwise. Two important exceptions: oral isotretinoin requires a 6-month washout before any laser/light treatment (because of impaired wound healing), and current photosensitising medications (some antibiotics, certain skincare actives) require a pause. Disclose your full medication list at consultation so we can plan safely.

An active pustular flare is a relative contraindication — we typically defer treatment until the flare has calmed (often 2–4 weeks, with topical or systemic anti-inflammatories prescribed by your doctor in the meantime). Treating into active inflammation can worsen the response and reduce the effectiveness of the session. For erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (predominantly redness and vessels, no active pustules), BBL can usually proceed.

Both are intense-pulsed-light platforms with FDA clearance for vascular and pigmented concerns; the practical choice depends on your specific skin and the practitioner's read of it. BBL HEROic uses Sciton's high-output BBL platform with finely customisable filters, often preferred for delicate or sensitive skin and well-published clinical protocols including the Forever Young BBL anti-ageing protocol. Lumecca is InMode's high-intensity IPL platform, sometimes preferred when fewer sessions are desired and tolerated. Yes — and this is the standard clinical approach. BBL is most effective as part of a broader plan: gentle, barrier-supporting cleansers and moisturisers; prescription topicals where indicated; daily mineral SPF 50; identification and avoidance of personal triggers (alcohol, certain spices, sun, extreme temperatures, harsh skincare actives). The vessels cleared during a session are permanently destroyed and removed by the body. However, rosacea itself is a chronic condition — new vessels can form over time in response to triggers, sun exposure, or natural ageing. This is why maintenance is part of the protocol: typically a single top-up session every 6–12 months keeps the visible redness controlled. Without maintenance, redness will gradually return — not immediately, but over months to years.
