Which treatments suit your skin type?

Skin is described by how it reacts to the sun, from type I (always burns) to type VI (never burns). It matters because light-based devices target pigment: the deeper the skin, the more carefully they have to be chosen. Below are the rules our practitioners plan with, and the same rules our free skin analysis follows.

The six skin types

  1. IAlways burnsNever tans
  2. IIUsually burnsTans a little
  3. IIISometimes burnsTans gradually
  4. IVRarely burnsTans easily
  5. VVery rarely burnsTans deeply
  6. VINever burnsDeeply pigmented

Types I to VI

Planned for every skin type

Radiofrequency, microneedling, peels, picosecond laser, HydraFacial and injectable skin treatments. Settings and strength are adapted to your skin at consultation.

Types I to III

Light-based: fair to olive skin

IPL and BBL light is absorbed by pigment, so our online plans only suggest them up to type III. For deeper skin, a practitioner can assess you in clinic, with a patch test.

Every treatment, side by side

Questions about skin types

Are laser and light treatments safe for dark skin?
It depends on the device. Light-based treatments such as IPL and BBL target pigment, so on deeper skin they carry a higher risk of burns and pigment changes. Our online plans only suggest them for skin types I to III. Our planning rules allow radiofrequency microneedling, microneedling, HydraFacial and PicoSure Pro for every skin type, with settings adapted to your skin, and your practitioner confirms what suits you at consultation, with a patch test where needed.
How do I know my skin type?
Think about how your skin reacts to the sun without protection: from always burning and never tanning (type I) to never burning (type VI). Our free skin analysis asks this and works it out for you, and your practitioner confirms it in clinic.
My skin is type IV to VI. Can I still treat pigmentation or redness?
Yes, with care. Your online plan suggests options planned for every skin type, and a practitioner can assess your skin in clinic, with a patch test, before considering anything light-based.
Why do the courses and downtime vary?
They are the typical plans our practitioners start from: how many sessions, how far apart, and how much visible recovery to expect. Your own plan is set at consultation, around your skin and your diary.
