How It Works

Electrocoagulation is a non-surgical treatment used to remove selected benign superficial skin lesions, including skin tags (acrochordons). The treatment uses a controlled electrical current delivered through a sterile treatment probe to generate heat, which coagulates and desiccates the targeted tissue. The treated tissue is progressively dehydrated and destroyed, allowing the lesion to be removed or to dry and separate naturally during the healing process. Treatment should only be performed following an appropriate assessment of the lesion. Any lesion that is suspicious, changing, pigmented, bleeding, ulcerated, painful or otherwise clinically uncertain should be assessed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before treatment.

Electrocoagulation uses a controlled electrical current to generate heat at the tip of a specialised treatment probe. The heat is applied precisely to the targeted skin tag, causing coagulation and desiccation of the unwanted tissue. What Can You Expect? Treatment is generally quick and targeted. You may experience a brief warming, stinging or pinching sensation during treatment. Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or crusting may occur afterwards. Healing time varies depending on the size and location of the treated lesion and the individual’s healing response. Before Treatment

The practitioner assesses the skin tag and surrounding skin, reviews relevant medical history, medications and contraindications, and confirms that the lesion is suitable for treatment.

The treatment, expected outcome, potential risks and aftercare are explained. Informed consent is obtained before proceeding.

Day of Treatment

Treatment Session The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. The electrocoagulation device is used to precisely treat the targeted skin tag.

Immediately After

The area may appear red or slightly swollen. A small treated area or superficial crust may be visible. Mild tenderness or warmth can occur.

Days 1–3

Early Healing Redness and sensitivity may be present. A small crust or scab may begin to form. Keep the area clean and avoid rubbing, scratching or picking.

Days 4–10

Healing & Crust Formation The treated tissue continues to dry and heal. The crust should be allowed to detach naturally. Do not pick or deliberately remove the crust, as this may increase the risk of scarring, infection or pigmentation changes.

1–2 Weeks

Skin Recovery The crust will usually have separated or significantly reduced, depending on the size and location of the treated lesion and individual healing response. The area may remain slightly pink or darker/lighter than the surrounding skin.

2–4 Weeks

Continued Skin Recovery The skin continues to remodel. Temporary redness or pigmentation changes may gradually become less noticeable. Continue protecting the area from direct sun exposure and use broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 once the skin has fully closed and healed.

Post-Treatment Care

Immediately after treatment: Keep the treated area clean and dry according to the practitioner’s instructions
Do not pick, scratch or deliberately remove any crust or scab that forms
Avoid rubbing or irritating the treated area
Avoid applying make-up directly over the treated area until the skin has sufficiently healed
⁠Avoid swimming, saunas, steam rooms and activities that cause excessive heat or sweating for the period advised by the practitioner
Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area
⁠Once the skin has closed/healed, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation
Do not use exfoliating acids, retinoids, scrubs or other potentially irritating products on the treated area until healing is complete, unless specifically advised otherwise

No. Electrocoagulation is suitable only for selected lesions that have been appropriately assessed as suitable for treatment. Any lesion that is suspicious, changing, bleeding, ulcerated or clinically uncertain should be medically assessed before treatment.

You may experience a brief stinging, pinching, warmth or mild discomfort during treatment. The level of discomfort varies depending on the size and location of the lesion and individual sensitivity.

Treatment is usually relatively quick. The exact duration depends on the number, size and location of the skin tags being treated. Your practitioner will advise you during your consultation.

Many small skin tags can be treated in a single session. However, larger or multiple lesions may require additional treatment. This depends on the individual lesion and how the skin heals.
