Rosacea Treatment Lumecca

Lumecca delivers broadband light tuned to wavelengths absorbed by haemoglobin in dilated superficial vessels — the same vascular structures that cause the visible diffuse redness and prominent capillary mapping of rosacea. The absorbed light converts to heat, the vessel wall is damaged, and the body clears the vessel over the following weeks. Over a course of sessions, the visible vascular component of rosacea reduces. The treatment manages the visible signs but does not cure rosacea itself, which remains a chronic inflammatory condition requiring ongoing care.

A typical initial course is 3–5 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Maintenance is then once or twice a year to keep the visible vascular component under control. More reactive or diffusely redness-affected skin may need slower pacing and lower energy settings — your practitioner will adjust the plan after the first 1–2 sessions based on your skin's response. Some patients find that combining Lumecca with the right skincare and trigger avoidance dramatically extends the time between maintenance sessions.

No — defer the session until your flare has settled. Treating into active pustular rosacea is uncomfortable, can worsen the inflammation, and reduces the effectiveness of the session. We typically wait 2–4 weeks after a flare settles before proceeding; your GP or dermatologist may prescribe topical or systemic anti-inflammatory treatment in the meantime to help calm the skin. Both are FDA-cleared intense-pulsed-light platforms that work through the same vascular-targeting mechanism. Practical differences are subtle: BBL HEROic (Sciton) is well-published for delicate or rosacea-prone skin with very customisable filter selection; Lumecca (InMode) is marketed around higher-output pulses and fewer sessions for many patients. Lumecca, like all IPL devices, requires careful screening on Fitzpatrick IV–VI because higher melanin levels increase the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For 24–48 hours either side of treatment, minimise everything that dilates your facial blood vessels: alcohol, very spicy food, very hot drinks, hot showers, saunas, vigorous exercise, and direct sun exposure. These are typical rosacea triggers anyway, but they are especially important close to a Lumecca session because dilated vessels at the time of treatment can affect targeting and post-treatment redness. Document your personal triggers and share them with your practitioner — managing them between sessions is half the battle.

The specific vessels destroyed during a session are permanently removed by the body. However, rosacea is a chronic condition — new vessels can form over time in response to triggers, sun exposure, or natural ageing. Most patients benefit from a maintenance session every 6–12 months to clear newly emerging vessels. With consistent SPF 50, trigger avoidance, and supportive skincare, some patients can extend maintenance to 12+ months between sessions. Without any maintenance, visible redness will gradually return over months to years.

In most cases yes — your prescribed topical rosacea medications (such as ivermectin, metronidazole, brimonidine, azelaic acid) should continue unless your GP or dermatologist advises otherwise. The week of treatment, we typically ask you to pause stronger irritants (retinol, exfoliating acids) for 5–7 days, but core rosacea prescription topicals are usually maintained because their action is anti-inflammatory rather than exfoliating.
