A brief, mild "purge" — short-lived bringing of underlying inflammation to the surface — is described by some patients in the first 2–7 days after a session. The aftercare on this page acknowledges this. A genuine, sustained acne flare is uncommon when the device is properly calibrated. If your skin reacts more reactively than typical, the practitioner can adjust energy on the next session. Continued cooperation with your skincare regimen during this window is important.

A standard course is 4–6 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart. Maintenance is then typically every 6–8 weeks once the active acne is controlled. The session count varies based on your acne severity, hormone influences, and how your skin responds — your practitioner reassesses every 2 sessions and adjusts the plan if needed. Acne is a multi-factorial condition (genetics, hormones, diet, stress), so IPL is rarely a stand-alone solution and works best alongside a tailored skincare and lifestyle plan.

Lumecca's primary clinical value is on ACTIVE inflammatory acne and post-acne redness/marks. Atrophic (depressed) acne scars — boxcar, rolling, ice-pick — are not effectively treated by IPL alone; they require resurfacing or remodelling modalities such as Morpheus8 RF microneedling, Dermapen 4 microneedling, or PicoSure Pro picosecond laser. We commonly stage the plan: Lumecca first to settle active acne and reduce inflammation, then move to scar-targeted treatments once the acne is stable.

For one week after each session, keep your routine simple, gentle, and non-comedogenic — pause active ingredients (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, strong AHAs/BHAs, salicylic acid) and let the skin recover. Continue gentle cleansing twice daily, use a fragrance-free moisturiser, and apply mineral SPF 50 every morning without exception. Most prescription acne medications continue as normal unless your practitioner advises pausing. After one week, you can typically resume your routine.
