TL;DR
BBL, IPL and PicoSure can be suitable in summer only if your skin is not tanned, sunburned or recently exposed to strong UV. Safe timing, SPF and honest consultation are essential to reduce pigmentation risk.
Laser Face Treatments in Summer: Myths About BBL, IPL and PicoSure
Summer is when many people start paying closer attention to their skin. More sunshine, holidays, outdoor events and lighter makeup can make pigmentation, redness, sun damage and uneven skin tone feel more noticeable.
This is also when treatments such as BBL, IPL and PicoSure become a common topic. One of the most frequent questions people ask is:
Can I have laser face treatments during summer?
The honest answer is: yes, sometimes — but only when your skin is suitable and you can follow the correct aftercare.
Summer does not automatically mean that all laser and light-based facial treatments are unsafe. However, treatments such as BBL, IPL and PicoSure need careful planning around sun exposure, tanning, holidays and SPF. The main concern is not the season itself. The real concern is treating skin that has recently been exposed to strong UV, is tanned, sunburned, sensitive or irritated.
Let’s break down the biggest myths.
Myth 1: You cannot have any laser face treatments in summer
This is one of the most common myths. You do not necessarily have to stop all treatments just because it is summer.
However, your skin needs to be in the right condition before treatment. For facial treatments such as BBL, IPL and PicoSure, your practitioner will usually ask whether you have recently been in the sun, used sunbeds, applied fake tan or returned from holiday.
This is because recently tanned or sun-exposed skin can be more reactive. It may also have a higher risk of irritation, burns or pigmentation changes after treatment.
At Innoderm, we always assess your skin before treatment. If your skin is not suitable on the day, it is safer to delay your appointment rather than risk unnecessary irritation.
Myth 2: BBL and IPL are exactly the same as laser
BBL and IPL are often described as laser treatments, but technically they are light-based treatments rather than traditional lasers.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It uses pulses of light to target concerns such as pigmentation, redness, visible vessels and signs of sun damage.
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It is an advanced light-based treatment commonly used to improve the appearance of redness, pigmentation, uneven tone and overall skin radiance.
PicoSure is different. PicoSure is a picosecond laser treatment, often used for concerns such as pigmentation, acne scarring, pores, texture and skin revitalisation.
Although BBL, IPL and PicoSure are often grouped together, they are not the same treatment. The right option depends on your skin type, your concern, your lifestyle and your recent sun exposure.
Myth 3: A light tan does not matter
Even a light tan matters.
When your skin is exposed to the sun, it produces more melanin. Many laser and light-based treatments also interact with pigment in the skin. If the skin has recently tanned, it can absorb energy differently and may be more likely to react.
This is especially important for facial treatments that target pigmentation, sun spots or uneven tone. The skin should be calm, stable and as close to its natural colour as possible before treatment.
If you have recently returned from holiday, spent a lot of time outdoors or noticed that your face has changed colour, your treatment may need to be postponed.
Myth 4: SPF alone makes summer treatments safe
SPF is essential, but it is not a complete shield.
Daily sunscreen helps protect the skin, but it does not cancel out the effects of strong sun exposure, sunbathing, sunbeds or tanning. If you are spending long periods outdoors, sweating, swimming or not reapplying SPF properly, your skin may still become tanned or more sensitive.
For BBL, IPL and PicoSure, we recommend avoiding direct sun exposure for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment. This helps reduce the risk of irritation and pigmentation changes.
SPF should still be used every day, even when it is cloudy. A broad-spectrum SPF helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays, which is important when maintaining results and protecting treated skin.
Myth 5: Fake tan is safer than real tan before treatment
Fake tan is not suitable before BBL, IPL or PicoSure.
Even though fake tan is not UV damage, it still darkens the surface of the skin. This can interfere with how light or laser energy is absorbed during treatment.
This includes gradual tanning moisturisers, tanning drops, spray tans, tanning mousse and any product that leaves colour on the skin.
Before your appointment, the treatment area should be clean, free from fake tan and as close to your natural skin tone as possible.
Myth 6: PicoSure is always fine in summer because it uses less heat
PicoSure is known for using very fast picosecond laser pulses and is often chosen for pigmentation, texture, pores and acne scarring. Some people may experience less downtime compared with more aggressive laser treatments.
However, this does not mean that sun exposure no longer matters.
After PicoSure, the skin still needs protection. Exposing treated skin to strong sun too soon may increase the risk of irritation, sensitivity or pigmentation changes.
Less downtime does not mean no aftercare. You still need to avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment, wear SPF daily and follow your practitioner’s advice.
Myth 7: One treatment before holiday will make your skin perfect
Many people want a fresh, glowing complexion before a holiday, wedding or special event. However, timing is very important.
BBL, IPL and PicoSure can help improve the appearance of skin tone, pigmentation, redness and texture, but they are not instant filters. Depending on the treatment, you may experience temporary redness, warmth, sensitivity or darkening of pigmentation before the skin looks clearer.
This is why we do not recommend booking a stronger facial laser or light treatment immediately before a sunny holiday.
If you have travel planned, it is better to book your consultation in advance. Your practitioner can advise whether treatment is suitable now or whether it is better to wait until after your holiday.
Myth 8: All skin types can be treated in the same way
Every skin type reacts differently to laser and light-based treatments.
Darker skin tones, recently tanned skin, melasma-prone skin and skin with a history of post-inflammatory pigmentation may need extra caution. This does not mean treatment is impossible. It means the treatment choice, settings, preparation and aftercare must be carefully planned.
A consultation is especially important if you have:
- Naturally darker skin
- Recent sun exposure
- Fake tan on the skin
- Melasma or hormonal pigmentation
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Sensitive or reactive skin
- A history of pigmentation after treatments
The safest treatment plan is always personalised.
Can you have BBL, IPL or PicoSure in summer?
Yes, in some cases. But the key is suitability.
You may be suitable for treatment if your skin is not tanned or sunburned, you have not used fake tan recently, you can avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment, and you are consistent with SPF.
You may need to delay treatment if you have recently returned from holiday, your skin is visibly tanned, you have sunburn or peeling, you use sunbeds, you cannot avoid direct sun exposure after treatment, or your skin is currently irritated.
The safest approach is to be honest with your practitioner about sun exposure, holidays, tanning products and your skincare routine.
Summer aftercare after BBL, IPL and PicoSure
After your treatment, your skin needs calm, simple care. Your exact aftercare will depend on the treatment performed, but general guidance may include:
- Avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks after treatment.
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF daily.
- Reapply SPF when outdoors.
- Avoid sunbeds completely.
- Avoid fake tan until advised.
- Avoid harsh exfoliants immediately after treatment.
- Pause retinol, acids or strong active skincare until your practitioner says it is safe.
- Avoid heat, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for the advised period.
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser.
- Do not pick, scrub or exfoliate treated pigmentation.
Good aftercare is not just about reducing side effects. It also helps protect your results.
The Innoderm approach
At Innoderm, we do not believe in one-size-fits-all skin treatments. Before recommending BBL, IPL or PicoSure, we assess your skin, your concerns, your treatment history, your lifestyle and your recent sun exposure.
For some clients, summer may still be a suitable time for treatment. For others, it may be better to focus on skin preparation, SPF, hydration and barrier support, then plan stronger treatments for a later date.
The safest and most effective treatment is the one your skin is ready for.
