Contraindications to treatment
  • Patients with active infections, such as herpes outbreaks, or inflammatory skin conditions (e.g., eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea during flare-ups) should avoid MOXI treatment until these conditions are resolved;
  • Sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners within 2-4 weeks before treatment increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and burns. Patients are advised to avoid direct sun exposure before and after the procedure to minimise complications;
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • Patients on photosensitizing medications, such as certain antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines), retinoids, or other drugs that increase light sensitivity, should avoid MOXI, as it can increase the risk of adverse reactions like burns or excessive redness;
  • Tendency to keloid scarring;
  • Patients with autoimmune disorders affecting the skin, such as lupus or scleroderma, may experience worsened symptoms with laser treatment;
  • Accutane, a strong medication for severe acne, can cause skin thinning and make the skin more vulnerable to laser treatments.

Preparation for the treatment

    • Limit direct sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners for 2-4 weeks before treatment;
    • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily if you are outdoors;
    • Stop using retinoids, glycolic acids, and other exfoliants at least 3-5 days before the procedure;
    • Avoid products with hydroquinone or other skin-lightening agents unless recommended by your provider;
    • Discontinue any photosensitizing medications, such as certain antibiotics or acne treatments like Accutane, at least 6 months before treatment;
    • Inform your therapist of all medications you are currently taking, especially blood thinners or medications that affect the skin;
    • Hydrate well in the days leading up to the treatment to keep your skin in optimal;
    • Avoid other aggressive skin treatments, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or ablative lasers, in the weeks leading up to the MOXI session to ensure the skin isn’t overly irritated;
    • For areas like the face, shaving before the procedure is often recommended to allow the laser to penetrate the skin without obstruction from hair.

Aftercare

    • Cleanse the skin two times a day with plain, lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, beginning the morning after the treatment. Use your hands and gentle patting motions. DO NOT rub, scrub, use an exfoliant or skin care brush on the treated area;
    • Moisturiser should be applied generously with clean hands over the treated area and reapplied whenever your skin feels dry. DO NOT apply any other products that were not instructed by your doctor – eg. essential oils, coconut oil, etc.;
    • Sunscreen is a MUST and should be used daily beginning the day after treatment and used consistently for up to 3 months post procedure. Use a physical sunscreen with Broadband UVA and UVB protection and a SPF of 30. Ensure to reapply during sun exposure.
